Chapter Ten

The next morning, as the Prior was making a final revision of his critique, it suddenly flashed into his mind that he had left the obnoxious blue book together with the Subprior's letter in Petroc's cell on the previous afternoon. Now even the Prior realised that The Beaten Track was hardly a suitable book for a pre-Reformation monk, so he hurried upstairs, somewhat perturbed, to retrieve it.

Petroc was in the Sacristy but had left the book on his table. It was lying just where the Prior had left it, and for one brief moment the latter hoped that it had been undiscovered. As he carried it downstairs, however, he noticed quite a wad of paper covered with Petroc's careful script, tucked just inside the front cover.

When he reached his room he opened the book and took out the manuscript, intending to return it, but stood transfixed when he realised that it was a logical analysis of F. D.'s opening chapters written in careful Latin.

Fascinated and entertained, he followed Petroc's refutation of the arguments. There were pages like the following:

"Argument to prove the necessity of much selfintrospection.—All corruption and disease are things which require frequent attention and much handling

The human soul is a mass of disease and corruption.

.'. The human soul requires frequent attention and much handling.
